The Best Pizza in New York

It costs $482.79 to get a decent pizza in San Francisco — $17 for the pie, $85 for cab fare, and $378.80 for the flight to New York.

This article from Wired.com and the fact that New Yorkers are always looking to find a good economical slice of pizza to scarf down inspired me to write this post.

The following is not meant to be a definitive list, as I admit I haven’t had the opportunity to check out all of the alleged best pizza spots.

1. Armondos II aka Starrett Pizza
location:1366 Pennsylvania Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11239 | map | (718) 642-8253
Growing up in Starrett City, going out for lunch used to be a special once a week event you had to remember getting a parental permission slip for. Aside from the nostalgia, hands down their pizza is the best in New York City . Every single ingredient tastes great and you never leave dissatisfied. I highly recommend it, even to those who are too scared to come to Brooklyn.

2. Woodlawn Pizza
location: Jerome Ave & Bainbridge Ave, Bronx, NY 10467 (under train station) | map
Located at the last stop on the 4 train in the Bronx. They make such good pizza, that if you find yourself on that side of the bridge you have to make a detour to get one of those oversized slices. (You have to get single slices to get the bigger sized slice). Compared to Armondos, Woodlawn slices are a little more flakier, but still very good.

3. Pizza Albas Pizzeria and Restaurant
location: 137-65 Queens Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11435 | map | 718-291-1620
A recent discovery, when I’m real hungry and if it hasn’t closed yet, this is the spot to hit up after work. It definitely carries that neighborhood Pizza shop vibe. It has a more expensive sit down Italian restaurant area in the back. There is seating in the Pizzeria area as well.

4. Maffei’s Pizza & Restaurant
location: 688 sixth Ave (corner 22nd St), New York, NY, 10010 | map
My sister treated me to this, and its really good! Its in Manhattan so its a little bit more pricey than what I’m used to, but the different types of slices are awesome.

5. Paul Michaels Brick Oven Pizza
location: 85-19 126th St Kew Gardens, NY 11415-3312 | map | 718-846-4065
A local pizza shop in Kew Gardens that sometimes seems overpriced for Queens “street pizza” but just tastes so damn good, sometimes you can’t resist. Theres also a restaurant segment to this Pizzeria. Even the drinks are overpriced though.

6. Johns Pizza
location: 260 W 44th St New York, NY 10036 | map | (212) 391-7560
Located in times square in front of Phantom of the Opera. This place is Zagat rated and is you guessed it.. expensive. If you are ever entertaining guests in the city, this is the place to take them. Their fancy shmancy pizzas are really filing and taste so good you want to keep eating.

Tasters Choice (hey I don’t guarantee you’ll enjoy the following)

7. Halal Bakery
location: 521 8th Ave New York, NY 10018 (between 36th St & 37th St) | map | (212) 695-2500
Why would you buy pizza from a halal spot is what you might ask. But being a new yorker sometimes you just jones for pizza. The heroes/rolls are good as well, my fave is roast beef on a roll. Halal bakery is a street-corner-store-front-Pizzeria slash bakery, Aside from Chicken guy (53rd and 6th) This is the spot to hit up for Halal food late at night when nothing else is open.

8. Crown Fried Chicken (aka New Crown)
location: 170-02 Hillside Ave Jamaica, NY 11432 | map | (718) 297-3200
This is some ghetto pizza, its super oily, tastes unusually sweet but for some odd reason its seriously addictive. I must say its the most unhealthy pizza in ny, but you might wanna try out a slice on the side to a larger meal.

Sidenote: YM guys made this place famous. There was a time when everyone from Jamaica would eat at the 168st Crown, then some pakis bought it out and the original owner moved to 170. We moved right with him. And thus new crown was born. It took everyone else some time to catch on. This eventually led to a whole lot of people gaining weight and a chicken cheese steak addiction.

So what’s your favorite NY Pizza spot?

    1. Lombardi’s, near Chinatown. Pricey but worth the trip from Jersey. Halal Bakery rocks.

    2. Singa’s Pizza is pretty good too. I used to go to the one in elmhurst, queens, but theyve since opened up branches in Jamaica (on Hillside on the asme block as halal dynasty) as well as out in long island in hicksville), and several other locations!

    3. Singas and Papa Johns are good as chain pizzas, but… cmon… thats not really NY Pizza!

    4. Chicago has the best Pizza in the world. Lou Malnatti’s, George and Georgetti, etc.

    5. ooops, i meant to say Chicago has the best pizza in the Universe..hahahaha

    6. Dani’s Pizza…on lefferts blvd…in Kew Gardens, One of my first stops when i get off the plane..and touch down in nyc….besides that…you can’t go wrong with many of the corner slice pizzerias in the city..I have to second the Armondos rating. and just for kickers Chicago style pizza..(stuffed pizza) disgusting…does not deserve to be called pizza…Chicagoans swear by it..why? i dont know.

    7. Maffei’s pizza is CHEAP. for me at least.

      peace

    8. u cant compare singa’s to papa johns. Singas isnt a national chain - i believe they are only NY based - and they began with the ELmhurst branch (the one i used to go to growing up) - and only expanded elsewhere recently (within past 5+ years or so).

    9. http://www.singaspizzas.com/site1/locations.asp

Okay fine, they are mostly in NY, they are in Jersey also, which should disqualify them hehe :)

    10. GIORDANAS STUFFED CHICAGO PIZZA IS AMAZING. It owns NY pizza

    11. Azmath thinks I’m nuts but I actually like Giordanos Chicago Pizza.

BUT there’s no comparison to authentic NY City Pizza. Asim try some of the places out that I mentioned, then tell us what you think.

    12. Whoever stated that Crown Fried Chickn has good pizza hasn’t the slightest idea what a pizza is. Crown takes frozen sauce throws it on a frozen crust and tops it with an anemic amount of stale cheese. This is conveyor belt pizza. When discussing fine pizza, bringing in Crown Fried chicken (known for their fast AFFORDABLE, sub par (all 100% frozen) food is like mentioning McDonalds as fine gourmet food.. The best pizza in the known universe, bar none, is Di Fara Pizza on Avenue J and East 15 street in Brooklyn. After a slice of this, all other pizzerias in the world cease exist! Anyone who considers Crown or Chicago Style pizza as food is not someone you should be taking food advice from. You should also try New Park Pizza in Howard Beach in Queens. (1) Di Fara (2) New Park (3) Armando’s in Starrett City. All the rest just got lucky to be on the list above because the person who made the list just doesn’t know.

    13. I don t like pizza :) thanks
