I was checking out E-bays version of Craigslist today and came across this ad which stated:

I am Giving away my PS3
Price: Free

Location: New York Manhattan
Date Listed: May-02-08

I just don’t use it anymore since I got my Xbox360 and just want to get rid of it. You can pick it up anytime.

You can e-mail me directly.

takemyplaystation3@gmail.com

So being Naive, I emailed right away and got back the following (auto-response) email:

Thank you for your interest but someone else contacted me first. If
you are still interested in the free PS3 you can check this out.

http://tinyurl.com/3dx2at

Also check this out.

http://tinyurl.com/2rnnca

You should never click on a tinyurl.com link without first previewing it using (in this case): http://preview.tinyurl.com/3dx2at

So basically this dude set this up to actually win himself a PS3. Pretty Smart….<fieldset class="zemanta-related" style="margin: 0.5em 0pt 1em; padding: 0pt;"><legend class="zemanta-title">Related articles</legend>

The other day I received an email about the upcoming MSA East Zone Conference in Newark, NJ. When I opened the email, I saw this huge Red table, and I was like woah! It had a big warning message on it (see screen below):

Even after marking this email as “Not Spam” this message had not gone away. After clicking around I found a new feature (see below):

So you pick “Report not phishing” and you get another annoying message (see below):

What the heck is this crap? Gmail should have a setting called Stupid User with a checkbox. I would like to uncheck that box. This is almost as bad as Windows Vista asking me if I am sure I want to install a exe file I just double clicked on!

I recently switched from Joomla over to Wordpress. One major step which was preventing me from making the move for so long was the export process. Then I found a post on rangit.com which had a script which would allow you to move the content over. But there was a problem. Wordpress had changed its database schema in its latest version (2.3.2) thus breaking the script (linked above). So I decided to take this on as a side project and fix it. I also made some changes which will make it even easier to use this script; such as allowing the user to set table prefixes in the config file.

This version of the script has been tested on Joomla 1.0.12 and Wordpress 2.3.2 and works pretty smoothly.

Step by Step Instruction (with Screenshots):

1. Unzip Joomla2WordPress.zip
2. Edit config.php and enter all missing values

3. Upload files to /export on your server

4. Add Categories in wordpress which you want to import into
5. Open www.yoursite.com/export/index.php on a browser

6. Select either a Joomla Section, Category or Links Category

7. Select a Wordpress Category to import into

8. Repeat Steps 5-7 till all of your articles have been imported

9. Enjoy and Spread the word!

Download: Joomla2WordPress Import Wizard

Notes:-minor glitch: If you create a WP category which is empty (has no posts), the articles will import just fine, but the category may not appear in the categories widget until you open at least one post in that category in /wp-admin and just hit save. If anyone knows how to fix this minor bug

Does this seem realistic? More importantly I wonder if this will really make us more productive? I think back to the days when we didn’t have cell phones and constant internet access even the task of picking someone up from the airport could take hours. Now you can track flight status on your phone and save time by leaving as late as possible. Also the person you are picking up can give you call when the plane has touched down, which helps you know how much time you need before they will be out of baggage claim. Something as simple as that has helped make life more efficient. Leaving me with more time to watch what I conveniently recorded on my DVR.

“Perhaps one of the more surprising results, this seems to imply that Joomla finds more users in the business community than the non-profit world. One possibility however, is that these are web designers using Joomla for their clients of all types.”

Time Magazine raises the same point.

Time Magazine Excerpt:

Is that man breaking into an apartment building? Does that tollbooth
operator realize she’s being photographed? And isn’t it illegal to have
cameras in New York’s Brooklyn Battery tunnel?

Such questions have been raging online in recent weeks, as Google’s
new” Street View” has sent techies scrambling to browse through the
miles and miles of street-level photos now available through Google
Maps. But while such blogs as BoingBoing.net and Mashable.com have made
something of a joke out of the many humorous (a man apparently caught
mid-sneeze), bizarre (the ghost of E.T.?) and lewd (a woman’s underwear
poking out of her low-riding jeans) images captured by the web giant,
privacy concerns have led many watchdog groups to quickly retort that

Its Official, Feedburner has been purchased. The feedburner team has blogged about it, in order to shed light on what this means for the future. If you visit any blog which is run for commercial purposes, you will find that they use feedburner to distribute their feeds. Reason being that for a commercial blogger stats mean everything. Advertisers will only consider a blog which has proven its worth. With feeds content can be viewed in other ways than by pages being loaded in browsers (thats the whole point of a feed!). So bloggers need a different way to determine their readership. Now that Google has taken them over, you can sure bet to see adsense integration. I just hope they won’t make it as complicated as analytics which I’m still struggling to understand (the reports are kind of bizarro). Oh FB has also put out a FAQ on the aquisition.

There’s a really good Comparison Chart here. Ayaz and I had this discussion a while ago, when we first created our respective blogs using Joomla. We quickly realized the shortcomings the Joomla CMS had when it came to blogging. For starters it didn’t have a built in commenting or tagging (taxonomy) system. When I complained about this on the joomla forums I was told that Joomla wasn’t going to cater to any specific crowd (i.e. bloggers). The point was made that Joomla is used for all types of sites, and 3rd party plugins were available to customize your site. As a developer in the back of my mind I also knew that if I wanted something really well integrated I would either have to wait a really long time or just develop something myself.

This site is my first attempt at working Drupal and I have to say that having blogging and commenting modules built in really makes a difference when deciding between Drupal or Joomla, well at least when picking between the two for a blogging platform.

I have also worked with Wordpress and I think thats the best platform for people who just want to blog. Drupal might be a step above that if you want your site to be more feature rich. I think as of now Joomla is the most extensive (Look at the camparison chart to see what Joomla has that Drupal doesn’t). Joomla also has a ton of extensions to play with developed by third party developers.

I’m going to continue to work with all of them to understand their ins and outs. I will develop my next group project in Drupal. Will keep you updated…..
