The problem: I had a wire running from my main router to my living room. I was afraid my kid was going to trip over it, and I was dreading having to run the wire along the roof cleanly. So I started asking around to see how I could get a secondary router to act as an access point (act as a receiver and pick up a wifi connection) and then distribute hard wired connections to my Blu-ray player, Xbox 360, Xbox, and Laptop which is hooked up to my TV.

The solution: DD-WRT, an alternative firmware (hack) for your router will take care of this for you. In this case I hacked a Linksys WRT54g v 6.

Step 1: Download files for your supported router here.

Step 2: Flash your router, see instructions here (specific to WRT54G). If you have a different router when you search using the link in Step 1 (above) it will give you directions specific to your router.

Step 3: Adjust Settings to get Router to act as a Client Bridge. See here:

To test the performance I had a blu-ray HD movie streaming from Netflix, while streaming a movie from my home PC using XBMC on the original Xbox, and using the Xbox360 to play NBA Live 10 online. I was surprised to see that everything was functioning without a hiccup. I even used Tversity (which acts as windows media center server on XP) to stream videos to my xbox 360 from my home PC.

Another benefit of doing this is extending your wifis reach throughout your home. Most people use DDRT for that reason.

I just wanted to share some of these neat services Google has made available. Make sure to add the numbers in this post to your address book so you would be more likely to use it.

Text 411
Simply text message your search query to 466453 (“GOOGLE” on most devices) and we’ll text message back your results. So what are some specific examples of what type of information is available?

Flight Status
Simply text your flight number to 466453 (‘GOOGLE’ on most mobile devices), and the status information will be sent back to you. Or text a specific airline name, and Google will send back the main phone number to call. So an example would be: Flights: ua 14

Weather
Simply send the following text to 466453 (‘GOOGLE’)
Example: (W)eather: w nyc
so w + your zip would also work

Pizza spot locator
Simply send an SMS to “GOOGL” or “46645″ with say “Pizza and your ZIP Code”

Here are some other examples, some are more useful than others:
Local Blockbuster finder
Local: blockbuster sf

Movies
(M)ovies: m 94114

Sports
Sports: ny jets

Stocks
Stocks: goog

Dictionary
(D)efine: d clew

Product search
Products: price ipod

Calculator
Calculator: 127*56

411
Can’t find what you need on text? try Google’s 411 service, it kicks butt: Call 1-800-GOOG-411

Their video (below) is kind of lame, doesn’t show actual examples. So how do you use Google SMS?

I was checking out E-bays version of Craigslist today and came across this ad which stated:

I am Giving away my PS3
Price: Free

Location: New York Manhattan
Date Listed: May-02-08

I just don’t use it anymore since I got my Xbox360 and just want to get rid of it. You can pick it up anytime.

You can e-mail me directly.

takemyplaystation3@gmail.com

So being Naive, I emailed right away and got back the following (auto-response) email:

Thank you for your interest but someone else contacted me first. If
you are still interested in the free PS3 you can check this out.

http://tinyurl.com/3dx2at

Also check this out.

http://tinyurl.com/2rnnca

You should never click on a tinyurl.com link without first previewing it using (in this case): http://preview.tinyurl.com/3dx2at

So basically this dude set this up to actually win himself a PS3. Pretty Smart….

I was getting all of my posts marked as spam by akismet on of my friends wordpress blogs. Then I came across this post.

So I went to http://akismet.com/contact/ and under “I have a support or feature request” I submitted the following email:

Azeem wrote:
> Everytime I comment on a wordpress blog using akismet I am wrongly flagged
> as spam. Many friendly bloggers have labeled my comments as “not
> spam” but I seem to be on a default blacklist. I use akismet myself
> on my blog and I am positive that you guys will me get off this
> blacklist. If you could also add a checkbox to say remember this poster
> or something like that. That may help.
>
> Some of the blogs I regularly try posting at:
> mujahideenryder.net
> chillyoislamyo.com
> hahmed.com/blog
>
> and I get flagged on all of them, and my comments do not come up despite
> most of these blogs labeling me as “not spam”.
>
> I wonder if its because of the .info in my address?
>
> Trackback hasn’t worked for me either, Im guessing for the same reason?
>
> Please help. Thanks.

Then I get this e-mail:

Hi,

Sorry – I have fixed that for you and your comments should now be good.

–
Mark

And now my comments go through!

The other day I received an email about the upcoming MSA East Zone Conference in Newark, NJ. When I opened the email, I saw this huge Red table, and I was like woah! It had a big warning message on it (see screen below):

Even after marking this email as “Not Spam” this message had not gone away. After clicking around I found a new feature (see below):

So you pick “Report not phishing” and you get another annoying message (see below):

What the heck is this crap? Gmail should have a setting called Stupid User with a checkbox. I would like to uncheck that box. This is almost as bad as Windows Vista asking me if I am sure I want to install a exe file I just double clicked on!

Does this mean Yahoo will suck as bad as hotmail? And will that crappy NWO ID system MS have be forcefully implemented? Microsoft has always been about software, I wonder if they just want Yahoos search capability and advertising network. Of course this is to counter Google in search and advertising. Whats going to happen to all those little companies Yahoo bought out.

TechCrunch Reports:

Together, they have a 15.6 percent market share of Internet traffic in the U.S. , compared to 7.7 percent for Google properties. But Google still has double the market share in search of both Yahoo and Microsoft combined.

I recently switched from Joomla over to WordPress. One major step which was preventing me from making the move for so long was the export process. Then I found a post on rangit.com which had a script which would allow you to move the content over. But there was a problem. WordPress had changed its database schema in its latest version (2.3.2) thus breaking the script (linked above). So I decided to take this on as a side project and fix it. I also made some changes which will make it even easier to use this script; such as allowing the user to set table prefixes in the config file.

UPDATE: This version of the script has been tested and works on all versions of Joomla between 1.0.12 – 1.5 and WordPress 2.3.2 -2.7 and works pretty smoothly. So it should work with the latest versions of both CMS platforms! Make sure to post your success or failure and which version you were using in the comments.

Step by Step Instruction (with Screenshots):

1. Unzip Joomla2WordPress.zip
2. Edit config.php and enter all missing values

3. Upload files to /export on your server

4. Add Categories in wordpress which you want to import into
5. Open www.yoursite.com/export/index.php on a browser

6. Select either a Joomla Section, Category or Links Category

7. Select a WordPress Category to import into

8. Repeat Steps 5-7 till all of your articles have been imported

9. Enjoy and Spread the word!

Download: Joomla2WordPress Import Wizard

Notes:-minor glitch: If you create a WP category which is empty (has no posts), the articles will import just fine, but the category may not appear in the categories widget until you open at least one post in that category in /wp-admin and just hit save. If anyone knows how to fix this minor bug

Does this seem realistic? More importantly I wonder if this will really make us more productive? I think back to the days when we didn’t have cell phones and constant internet access even the task of picking someone up from the airport could take hours. Now you can track flight status on your phone and save time by leaving as late as possible. Also the person you are picking up can give you call when the plane has touched down, which helps you know how much time you need before they will be out of baggage claim. Something as simple as that has helped make life more efficient. Leaving me with more time to watch what I conveniently recorded on my DVR.

“Perhaps one of the more surprising results, this seems to imply that Joomla finds more users in the business community than the non-profit world. One possibility however, is that these are web designers using Joomla for their clients of all types.”

Questions on what other CMS’s are used by these individuals bought up the usual suspects; WordPress followed by drupal.

I came accross this very interesting job opening on Yahoo’s hotjobs.com. They are looking for someone with 3 years of experience with WordPress to manage their blogs on NYtimes.com. If you have been to Nytimes.com in the last year you will see their push to incorporate Web 2.0 technology. Its cool to see how many major sites have adopted opensource for at least their blogging needs instead of creating their own proprietary platform.

Here’s the job description:
NYTimes.com, the #1 newspaper site with 1.7 million worldwide visitors a day, is seeking an experienced WordPress Developer to manage our highly-trafficked and growing set of blogs (http://www.nytimes.com/blogs). The blogs have all been highly customized to fit into the NYTimes technology stack and publishing environment. Beyond having deep experience with the WordPress platform and its plug-ins, the ideal candidate will be a savvy, all-around web applications developer who is comfortable in a LAMP environment.

Oh, and the pay is not listed.
