I had written on my blog before about the WWE rehashing the ARAB Bad Guy Gimmick. Well now TNA is doing it.

As if having a bad guy Niqabi manager wasn’t enough. The twist here is that “Sheikh Abdul Basheer” (formerly Davari in WWE) says that he’s an American and loves his country, but then double talks with vehement anti-American rhetoric. The problem I have with this picture is it subtly implies that middle-easterners (or the other if you will) will never be truly American, and you should always be suspicous of them, especially when they say anything critical.

People never get tired of this crap. And of course you need an American Hero to talk down the Foreign bad guy:

What’s ingenious about this is it touches on the complexity of Identity Issues.

shotout to Haseeb for sending this video to me.

When she says Kong is a woman of peace, I hear the parallel: Islam is a Religion of Peace. Obviously Kong is a violent monster, so does this subtly imply that Islam is a religion of violence?

When I showed this video to my wife.. she asked why her eyebrows were all done up. Only a female would come up with that observation.

This is not the first time A Arab/Muslim Bad guy has been used in wrestling. We all remember the Iron Sheikh, and more recently Muhammad Hassan.

This just further shows that ignorant and racist attitudes still exist all across our country. Wrestling is a very American “entertainment sport” which gets millions of viewers.

Some youtube commenters asked why is she dressed up like a ninja? Well she is wearing something called Niqab. Which is a face veil. She is also wearing all black which is popular/standard in some Muslim countries. If you are wondering what the Islamic position is on the face veil.. the answer is.. it is disputed if it is a requirement for all Muslim women or if covering the entire body except for the hands and face is the requirement.

The truth is amongst the female companions of prophet Muhammad (S) both practices are found. Amongst the companions they also differed on it being a requirement. There are clear hadith which mention that a woman must cover everything except for her face and her hands, so we know that is a bare minimum requirement. There are verses of the Qur’an which are pointed to when people promote Niqab as being obligatory. Others would argue that those verses if taken in their context are directly related to the wives of the prophet (only).

The best resource I have found on the topic is the website http://www.muhajabah.com/niqab-index.htm The sister running the site has done a great job at compiling opinions from both sides of the spectrum. It is additionally interesting that she herself has adopted the veil, but according to her study believes it is not obligatory on all Muslim women. That shows that she is not biased against it, but has objectively come to that conclusion.

I personally believe that sisters living in the west should wear clothing which is covering, but at the same time non-threatening. When people hide their face, many tend to relate that with people with bad intentions. In the U.S. wearing all black can seem grim or even goth-like. I’m not saying to wear hot pink hijabs, but try some neutral colors which make you seem approachable. I once saw a sister in all black with Niqaab pushing a bright yellow H3 Hummer which to me seemed like a stark contradiction in purpose.

[[WWE]] a publically traded company has forced [[Rob Van Dam]] to drop both of his Championship belts after he was arrested in Ohio along with Sabu a few days ago. They were caught “Riding Dirty” with 18 grams of Marajuana and some pain killers. RVD was known to be a Weed Smoker (may Allah guide him). The WWE had a meeting with both wrestlers after they were released on bail. Then they had RVD drop both titles. The WWE belt was dropped to Edge, and the ECW title was dropped to Big Show. There is even talk about their contracts being completely terminated. What I don’t get is why did the WWE play on the fact that he is a weed smoker in order to promote their products. For example This t-shirt on sale at the WWE Shop has the phrase: “Flying Higher than ever”. On a recent promo RVD said.. “I gotta get rolling”. On last years One Night Stand Paul Heyman straight up came to the ring and said he just had “smoked a joint with Van Dam”. RVD on his site said he was celebrating 420 (April 20th- Natl Weed Smoking Day) with Samoa Joe, a TNA Wrestling Talent. One of RVD’s Monikers is “RVD:420 because I just smoked your a–”. Which he stated on ONS 2005. On his DVD he also has some jokes about smoking up. Like when Coach asks him how high does he get…. when he does his 5 star frog splash. So I think its very hipocritical of the WWE to reap the benefits of pushing a Weed Smoker to the top (getting weed smoking fans behind him). And then when he gets arrested, letting him crash and burn. About the painkillers all wrestlers use them because they really need them when they wrestle night after night. This is the ugly side of the business that no one wants to think about. But when you push alcoholism, weed smoking, and promiscuity what do you think is going to happen? If its not good for the business when someone gets arrested, or when someone dies, it should not be good at any point in time. They should sincerely push him to quit and they should stop trying to play both sides of the fence. Then again the WWE or other wrestling promotions are not known for their sense of morality anyway. I guess I am ticked because I could care less about the business, but care more about watching great wrestlers perform. I guess its hard to seperate whats real from what’s supposedly fake.

At ECW One Night Stand 2006 [[RVD]] Finally achieved what he has deserved for a very long time. He has become the WWE Champion. Although now it looks like they are making him hold two titles. One is going to be the official ECW title and he is going to hold the WWE Title. Now that he is on the ECW Brand (moved from RAW) I guess that means they will make him drop the WWE title and make it go back to RAW, so they can have contention for titles on each show. The way in which he won was pretty wack, but from a story line viewpoint it was brilliant. Edge interfered by spearing Cena through a table. Since Cena was getting alot of heat, they made him come out more aggressive. If he got beat up (like he should have) it would have really hurt his fan base and that wouldn’t help the company since his merchandise really sells. The ECW fans were vicious, they chanted “You can’t wrestle!, You can’t wrestle!”. After he did a impressive power move they chanted: “You still suck!, You still suck!”. When he did his patented moves they chanted: “Same old Sh–, Same old Sh–”. I was dissaponted that RVD didn’t unveil any new moves. I wish the finish was something spectacular. I also wish he showed off some of his great in ring wrestling skills, but then again Cenas style would not compliment that. The new ECW show on scifi is kinda weak. It’s too short only an hour long and I feel that they don’t have enough wrestlers on the roster. Btw at One night stand the hottest sign was hanging from the balcony which read “If Cena Wins we Riot”. I truly believe that would’ve happened.

ok I know I had promised that I wouldn’t have back to back posts from the same category.. my last post was placed under wrastlin and nostalgia… but this one is going under ranting and raving, (and wrastlin ) Here it goes:After seeing my last post my buddy Ammar who goes to UCONN (University of Connecticut) hooked me up with a video of a recent visit which the Ultimate Warrior made to their campus. He was invited by the Republican club to give a talk on his beliefs on conservatism. In the beginning of his speech he started out giving a classic stay in school/a mind is a terrible thing to waste speech which you would expect from any celebrity turned orator. What seemed like sensible advice soon took a philosophical turn towards understanding the properties of morality. The Warrior quickly went on the offensive to denounce liberalism. Some hecklers in the crowd were harping on his comments and were waiting for the opportune moment to make a scene. The warrior provided them with a plethora of insulting comments in return.

The fireworks started when warrior said:
“Liberal thinking has created an abyss of moral relativity where everything is as legitimate as everything else…. the bum is as legitimate as the businessman … , that queers are as legitimate as heterosexuals…, that Kwanzaa is just as legitimate as Santa Claus and Christmas”

At one point one of the hecklers yelled out.. What the f- is wrong with homosexuality? and warrior says:
“queering doesn’t make the world work.” I thought he was hilarious. Remember this is the same guy who ran into the ring and shook the ropes like crazy. While he was getting mad he was stomping his foot. I mean in the ring stomping your foot has a different effect than doing it in a lecture hall. ha. It was crazy how he was taking the fight to the audience. He was asking some questions and in response some girl said the government should take care of its citizens. And he says to her “What country do you live in?… this is not a socialist country”

So after watching this video, I decide to run a search on some blog search engines to see what other people are saying about this incident. It turns out to be really hot news. The Republican club actually issued an apology for the things he said. So then the warrior denounced them on his website. He also issued a press release. If you think his website condemnation is funny wait till you read this….On the website http://www.somethingawful.com they have something called Awful link of the day. ultimatewarrior.com was featured as an awful link of the day. Much to the dismay of the warrior. So Ultimate decides to have an e-mail sent to their webmaster threatening to sue him for illegal usage of his copyrighted name. Btw Warrior beat WWF/WWE in court for the trademark on his name. And he legally changed his name to Warrior. So now here is the funny part. The exchange of emails between the webmaster for somethingawful.com and the communications director for the warrior is absolutely hilarious! This is something you must check out. Go to: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2790 Make sure to click on the next page button to read the entire exchange.Amendment:I forgot to mention… He went on this rant about the founding fathers being the most amazing people who ever walked this earth (ha, someone yelled out- “what about slavery!”). And then he said that America has the superior culture and civilization to the world. Then he read the oath which every naturalized citizen has to read… and then he says… that every American even the ones born here should live up to this same oath.I thought some of his points were interesting. I agree with his stance on moral relativity (I would disagree on his source of morality which is the divine, in my view) but the problem is he has a biased application of his own stated principles. For example he thinks Santa Claus and Christmas is all well and good but kwanza is not. To me both holidays are equally preposterous. They are both man made and thus if condemned both should get the same flak. He is right about there being universal principles which all man is in tune with, In Islam we call that Fitra.Anyone can look at what the Warrior is preaching and say he is a racist, anti-immigrant, anti-world (beyond our borders), one-sided, Maniac. Although he would be offended because Hulk Hogan’s followers were Maniacs, thus given the name Hulkamaniacs. But Warrior was on a different trip, one which he dubbed as Warrior Wildness. Indeed.

Edit: Here’s the video!

Alot of people wonder why I like wrestling. I don’t think I’ve had much of a choice. As a little kid I grew up watching wrestling with my uncles, eating WWF Superstars Cereal, watching the WWF cartoon with Hulk Hogan and Junk Yard Dog. Man Wrestling was the best. My favorite singles wrestler was Hogan when I was little but then out of no where Ultimate Warrior arose. He had just as good of a body. And to little kids it was all about the muscles… well there was also his colorful wristbands, cool outfits, and of course the face paint. His eccentric style blew away the classic Hulk Hogan style. And in Wrestlemania 6 they made hogan drop the Belt to the Warrior.

One thing I can vividly remember is that back in the day all wrestling matches (especially at PPVs) had live demos cut where the wrestlers would get in front of the camera and would just be making mean looking faces, while saying things to intimidate thier opponents. The funny thing was they would be staring at the camera and tallking as if they are looking at thier opponent. And it was so obvious that they were trying really hard to be tough. So they would be doing things like pacing around, and snarling, and trash talking. Man it was beautiful. Now what I am going to do is show you why a little kid is swept away by the raw machoism of it all.

CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO IVE COMPILED OF HULK/WARRIOR DEMOS!

I remember other Demos done by tag teams such as the Road Warriors, and Demolition. In my sisters Ameen video, me and my cousins walk in to the room where they are recording…. and we come in like the bushwackers, and while our moms want us to stand still (while they are making a video!) we are making faces like the demolition would during thier promos… we were so cool. If I find that tape, Im going to rip those segments and hopefully I can find some old demotion and bushwackers vids where I could blend them together hehe. Also me and my cousin were the rockers. I couldn’t beleive he threw me through a glass window on the barber shop…. well…. he did launch me via a slingshot into the open closet off the bed….. so I shoulda known. We used to also play tag team matches and wrestle against pillows. We also used to make our own Championship belts with Construction paper, man they used to be so cool. My nephew/cousin recently told me that when he’s bored, some days he starts making Wrestling belts…hahaha! 15 years later! When I used to beat him fair and square he would lie and say it was only a two count, then he would start fighting me for real. And I would keep beating him over and over, and he would keep coming at me. Ha, someone should have told him… Wrestling is fake. But of course which little kid is going to believe you when you tell them that?

On the WWE site it states:

“All Muhammad Hassan wanted was to coexist with his American neighbors and feel a sense of belonging. That wasn’t meant to be. So now, Hassan and Khosrow Daivari are taking out their frustration in WWE.Hassan first directed his anger at Jerry “The King” Lawler, who took exception to Hassan’s anti-American rhetoric. The two squared off in a Monday Night RAW Arab-American debate, but that broke down into an ugly brawl. That event led to a match between Hassan and The King at New Year’s Revolution.During his in-ring debut at the pay-per-view in Puerto Rico, Hassan had an impressive showing, finishing off Lawler with a modified STO finisher. The next night on RAW, Hassan took out The Hurricane in a similar fashion. There’s no telling who’s next on the list for this bold newcomer.” On a wrestling discussion board someone made an interesting comment: “When does he start using the camel clutch as his finisher? And when will he start with “Iran, Number One. USA hak-too” (or however you simulate spitting)? How soon before he comes to the ring in those curly shoes?” and then he suggests that the WWE should send their gimmick back the 80’s ha.

I recently watched the Royal Rumble in which Muhammad Hasan was making his entrance as 10 or so wrestlers in the ring just stopped and focused all their attention on him. The crowd started chanting USA USA USA, and as soon as he got in the ring all the wrestlers jumped him, beat him down, and threw him out collectively thus eliminating him. It was basically a way to let that rag head know USA is A OK. So what does he do? He attacks a much smaller wrestler from behind to take out his frustration out on him and gets booed by the fans in the process. Some are calling him an instant heel (bad guy). When the wrestlers were pounding on him it was almost being done patriotically especially since we are at war (with arabs and muslims?)But this is nothing new. the WWF (now known as WWE) has had a long history of having racially stereotypical characters. They had Nikolai Volkov a Russian who used to go toe to toe with Hulk Hogan, the real American hero. And then there was the legendary Iron Sheik (who carried an Irani flag to the ring). And then during the Gulf War they had the Wrestler turned GI JOE character Seargant Slaughter play the role of an Iraqi Sympathazier (he used to wear an Iraqi uniform to the ring-see image below). Hulk Hogan mentions in his autobiography (yes Hogan is literate) that Seargant Slaughter used to get death threats from crazy fans who believed he was really an Iraqi sympathizer.

And you thought the new season of 24 was bad!
